What will therapy look, sound and feel like?

While I practice an eclectic combination of therapeutic techniques borrowed from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, and Emotionally Focused Therapy and Attachment Theory among others, my approach is guided by Humanistic Psychology.

Humanistic psychology is based on the idea of human potential and is a nod to each person’s innate ability to reach wellness. I
am merely a guide and partner on your journey to making shifts in your thinking, being and feeling to better serve you. I believe in you.

Systems theory recognizes that nothing operates in a vacuum. Each individual is part of a complex system - every thought, feeling and behavior is influenced by and has an impact on our environment which includes other individuals and groups we belong to. Together we can focus on your perspectives and interactions with others, but not without examining your system and outside influences which trigger and reinforce your distress. I will help you identify and remove obstacles and adjust relational patterns to support you in your achievement of emotional wellness. This is where examining Codependency comes into play.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is widely practiced in counseling today. The premise is that our emotional distress is the result of unhelpful ways of thinking and behavior. By examining thought distortions and patterns that are harmful to your self-esteem and making shifts in your perspective, we can work together to improve your symptoms of anxiety and depression. CBT involves not only thought replacement, but also adjustment to behavior that is holding you back from achieving wellness. Therapy is structured around introspection in the counseling session and homework in between meetings and motivated clients often experience rapid improvement.

Solution Focused Brief Therapy is exactly what it sounds like. Together we will process the conflict or dilemma in your life to help you with clarity, confidence and communication. At the same time we will determine immediate coping strategies to alleviate distress and restore your emotional balance. While SFBT is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy that is specific to a particular challenge, the therapeutic benefits will also be applicable to other life situations in the future.

Emotionally Focused Therapy is based on the Attachment Theory and is used in working with   individuals, couples and families.  We are wired to need each other, to be able to depend on each other for our survival and thrival. When we feel an imbalance in our relationships, we feel insecure which can disrupt our lives with emotional distress. Oftentimes we present emotions outwardly that aren’t exactly in sync with our inner experience. A partner may express anger and frustration towards the retreating partner, who may withdraw even further to avoid conflict, when actually sadness, rejection and fear are the primary underlying emotions. Together we will work to acknowledge the source of the insecurity, identify the powerful emotions reinforcing the disconnection, and invite vulnerability to heal the wounds that ail you. Again, we will explore Codependecy.

Support Groups can be incredibly healing as a stand alone therapy or in conjunction with individual therapy. In A support group experience you can expect:
An introduction to the therapeutic experience
A community of group members who can empathize with your challenges
An opportunity to practice new thoughts and behaviors in a safe space
The give and take of accepting help from and helping others in the process
Participation in skills and experiential group exercises
